REPUBLIC OF KOREA TO HOST MEETING ON DISARMAMENT, NON-PROLIFERATION
NORMS IN EAST ASIA FROM 3-5 DECEMBER
NEW YORK, 26 November (Department for Disarmament Affairs) -- The Department for Disarmament Affairs through its Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific will convene a meeting on “Challenges to Non-proliferation and Disarmament Norms in East Asia” on Jeju Island, Republic of Korea, from 3 to 5 December 2003. This is the second annual regional disarmament meeting organized jointly by the Centre and the Government of the Republic of Korea.
The meeting will deal with proliferation and disarmament challenges in East Asia, response to threats of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and issues of non-proliferation on the Korean peninsula, as well as proliferation concerns, and issues of verification. Within this framework, the meeting will address, among other things, the prospects of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT); compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention; export control; the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI); Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR); and verification in the field of the WMD and missiles.
Representatives from governments, academic and research institutes, as well as non-governmental organizations, mainly from Asia and the Pacific region, will participate in the meeting in their personal capacity.
