NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BHUTAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Daw Penjo, the new Permanent Representative of Bhutan to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General, Kofi Annan.

Mr. Penjo joined Bhutan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1980.  Before his current appointment, he was the director of the bilateral department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

From 1997 to 2000, he served as counsellor and deputy chief of mission at the Royal Bhutanese Embassy in New Delhi and, from 1994 to 1997, he was posted to the Royal Bhutanese Embassy in Dhaka, where he worked as first secretary and deputy chief of mission.

Between 1990 and 1994, he served as head of the Bilateral and Multilateral Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and earlier in his career, from 1986 to 1990, he was posted at the Permanent Mission of Bhutan to the United Nations in Geneva.

Born on 7 March 1958, Mr. Penjo earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Delhi and a masters degree in International Relations from Tufts University.  He is married and has three children.
