NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BOLIVIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
Ernesto Araníbar Quiroga, the new Permanent Representative of Bolivia to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General, Kofi Annan.
Before his current appointment, Mr. Araníbar worked as a consultant with the Market Access and Poverty Alleviation section of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) from June to July 2003.
Earlier in his career, he held positions in the Government of Bolivia. From April to October 1984, he was the Minister of Planning and Development, following a period from October 1982 to January 1983 as Minister of Finance.
A former Professor in the Faculty of Economics at the University of the City of San Andres in La Paz, Bolivia, he has published several books on economics and development for the Latin American region.
Throughout his career in the public and private sectors, Mr. Araníbar served in a number of international and national capacities, holding leadership positions in several instances. He was the Secretary-General of the Fomento Andina Corporation of Venezuela and, from 1988-1993, the Senior Regional Advisor at the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) regional office, for Latin America and the Caribbean.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in humanities in 1963, and in 1977 an honours degree in the Literature of Economics from the Catholic University of Lovaina in Belgium. In 1978, he became a full-fledged economist with the Consejo Nacional
de Educacion Superior.
Born on 24 January 1951, in Cochabamba, Bolivia, Mr. Araníbar is married, and in addition to his mother tongue of Spanish, he is fluent in English and French.
