NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF LIBYA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Ali Abdussalam Treky, the new Permanent Representative of Libya to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.  He had also held that post from 1986 to 1991 and from 1982 to 1984.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Treky was Secretary of the General People’s Committee for African Unity from February 2000 to June 2003 and Deputy Secretary for African Affairs from March 1999 to February 2000.  He had also served as Secretary (Ambassador) of the People’s Bureau in France from 1995 to 1999 and Permanent Representative of Libya to the League of Arab States from 1991 to 1994.  He had been Secretary of the People’s Bureau for Foreign Liaison from 1984 to 1986.

From 1976 to 1982, Mr. Treky held the post of Secretary of Foreign Affairs, and that of Deputy Secretary of the Political Affairs Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Libya from 1974 to 1976. 

Other positions held by Mr. Treky include: Director of the African-Asian Affairs Department from 1972 to 1974, Director of the Political Affairs Department in 1970, and Plenipotentiary Minister in the Ministry of External Affairs and Unity in 1970.

Born in Misrata, Libya, in 1938, Mr. Treky received a Masters degree in History from Garyounes University in Benghazi, Libya, and a Ph.D in History from Toulouse University in France.  He has been decorated with Libya’s Great Al-Fateh Medal and is married with four children.
