NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF NORWAY PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Johan Ludvik Lovald, the new Permanent Representative of Norway to the United Nations, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.
Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Lovald served as Deputy Secretary-General responsible for foreign policy at Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Mr. Lovald’s career in the Foreign Service began with his appointment to the Foreign Affairs Ministry in 1970 and among the positions he held were: Deputy Director General of the Political Department (1991-1994); Assistant Director General (1989-1991); Head of the Disarmament Division (1982-1986); and Executive Officer (1981-1982 and 1975-1977).
Mr. Lovald’s diplomatic career also included postings at several of Norway’s overseas offices. From 1996 to 2000, Mr. Lovald served as Norway’s Ambassador in Ottawa, Canada. Between 1986 and 1989, he served as Political Affairs Counsellor of Norway’s Permanent Delegation to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Brussels. In 1981, Mr. Lovald was Vice Consul of the Norwegian Information Service in New York. From 1977 to 1980, he held the post of First Secretary at Norway’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations. From 1973 to 1975, he was Second Secretary at the Norwegian Embassy in Beijing, China.
Mr. Lovald received a doctoral degree in political science in 1970 from Northwestern University, United States.
Born on 14 May 1943, Mr. Lovald is married with three children.
