Biographical Note


NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF KAZAKHSTAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Yerzhan Kh. Kazykhanov, the new Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.


Until his current appointment in May this year, Mr. Kazykhanov was Director of the Department of Multilateral Cooperation in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  During the same period, he also held the post of Secretary-General of the National Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).


Between 1995 and 2000, he served as Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan to the United Nations in New York, prior to which he was Chief of Protocol in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1993.  Before that, he held the positions of Second and then First Secretary of the Department of Political Affairs in the same Ministry between 1989 and 1993.


The new Kazakhstan envoy attended the Saint Petersburg State University’s Oriental Faculty in the Russian Federation from 1981 to 1987; the Moscow Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1991; and the Foreign Service Training Institute in New Delhi, India, in 1992.  In 1993, he attended the Foreign Service Training Institute in Washington, D.C.


Born on 21 August 1964, Mr. Kazykhanov is married with two children and speaks Russian, English and Arabic.
