Biographical Note
NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MALTA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Victor Camilleri, the new Permanent Representative of Malta to the United Nations, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.
Before taking up his present post, Mr. Camilleri was Malta’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium and Permanent Representative to the European Union in Brussels (1997-present). He served once before as Permanent Representative of Malta to the United Nations in New York from 1991 to 1993.
He was Malta’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom from 1996 to 1997, a position he also held in 1991. He was Permanent Secretary at Malta’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1993 to 1996.
Mr. Camilleri held a number of other positions during his long diplomatic career -- which began in 1968 -- including Deputy High Commissioner in London (1987-1990); Acting Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Valletta, Malta (1985-1987); and Permanent Representative of Malta to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Vienna and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris (1981-1984).
Mr. Camilleri entered the Maltese Civil Service as a teacher in the Education Department in 1959 before joining the External Affairs Service of the Ministry of Commonwealth and Foreign Affairs.
He was educated at Birmingham University, United Kingdom, and Columbia University, New York, United States.
Born in Saint Venera, Malta on 8 October 1942, Mr. Camilleri is married and has two sons.
