NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BRAZIL PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Ronaldo Mota Sardenberg, the new Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Sardenberg held various positions in the Brazilian Government, including Minister of Science and Technology (since 1999), Minister for Special Projects (1999), and Secretary for Strategic Affairs of the Presidency of the Republic (1995-1998). He also served as Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committees on Wood Production (1997), Bi-oceanic Transport Corridors (1996), and Lands Owned by the Federal Government in the State of Pará (1996).
Mr. Sardenberg’s previous overseas assignments include the following: Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations (1990-1994) which included two years on the Security Council and serving as Council President in October 1993; Ambassador to Spain (1989-1990); and Ambassador to the Soviet Union (1985-1989). He is a career diplomat, having joined the foreign service in 1964.
Born on 8 October 1940 in Itú, Brazil, Mr. Sardenberg holds a Bachelor of Law from the University of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro (1963) and is a graduate of the Rio Branco Institute, the Brazilian Foreign Service Academy, in Brasilia (1964). He is married.
