PRESS STATEMENT ON LIBERIA BY SECURITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT

Following is the press statement on Liberia delivered today by Security Council President Kishore Mahbubani (Singapore):

Members of the Council received a briefing by Assistant Secretary-General Ibrahima Fall on the Secretary-General's report on Liberia's compliance with paragraph 2 of resolution 1343 (document S/2002/494);

Members of the Council also received a briefing by the Chairman of the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1343 (2001) concerning Liberia, on the Committee's discussions on the recommendations contained in the Panel of Experts' supplementary report (document S/2002/470 dated 19 April);

Members of the Council conducted a review of the sanctions imposed on Liberia under paragraphs 5 to 7 of resolution 1343, as mandated by paragraph 23 of the same resolution;

Members of the Council also had a discussion on a draft resolution on Liberia, on which the Council intends to vote on Monday, 6 May.
