MEETING BETWEEN UNITED NATIONS, REGIONAL ORGANIZATIONS TO BE CONVENED

AT HEADQUARTERS, 30 APRIL – 2 MAY

Ongoing efforts to enhance cooperation in peace-building and conflict prevention will be discussed by the United Nations system and regional organizations from 30 April to 2 May 2002 at a working level meeting to be convened at United Nations Headquarters by the Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Kieran Prendergast.  The meeting is a follow-up to the Fourth High-Level Meeting between the United Nations and Regional Organizations convened by the Secretary-General in February 2001.

Eighteen regional and subregional organizations have been invited (see attached list).  In addition, United Nations organs, agencies, departments and programmes will also participate.

During the current session, bilateral meetings between the UN system and each of the 18 participating regional organizations will concentrate on developing 13 specific modalities of cooperation in the fields of conflict prevention and peace-building identified by previous meetings.

This meeting constitutes part of the Secretary-General’s broader efforts to move the international community from a culture of reaction to a culture of prevention, as called for in his recent report to the Security Council on the “Prevention of Armed Conflict” (S/2001/574).
