EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE EXPRESSES SATISFACTION AT PROGRESS ACHIEVED


TOWARDS REVITALIZING UNIVERSITY FOR PEACE

SAN JOSE, 7 February (University for Peace) -- The Fifth Session of the Executive Committee of the Council of the University for Peace was held at the University campus on 7 February to discuss a range of issues relating to the present and future activities of the institution such as the new academic programme of education, training and research; the extension of programmes into Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Central Asia and Latin America; cooperative agreements with partner institutions; and other administrative matters.  The Committee agreed to convene the thirteenth Session of the Council in New York on 6 and 7 May.


The Committee expressed its satisfaction with the progress achieved in launching the new teaching programme and strengthening the financial base of the University and in realizing the goals set by the Council for the revitalization of the University.


The meeting was attended by Maurice Strong, President of the Council and Chairman of the Executive Committee; Dr. Elizabeth Odio, Vice President of the Republic of Costa Rica and Vice President of the Council; Martin Lees, Rector; Sverre Lodgaard, Director of the Norwegian Institute for International Relations; and Ambassador Mohamed Sahnoun, Director of the Africa Programme of the University and Special Advisor to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
