NGO COMMITTEE TAKES NOTE OF 20 QUADRENNIAL REPORTS,
LEAVES ACTION PENDING FOR FOUR
The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) today took note of
20 quadrennial reports submitted by NGOs as it met to review such submissions and to consider new applications for consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
It also decided to leave action pending with respect to four quadrennial reports after various delegations registered reservations or sought further clarification regarding the activities of the respective organizations.
As it took up its review, the Committee took note of the reports submitted by the African Society of International and Comparative Law; Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities; International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction; and the Commission for the Defense of Human Rights in Central America.
It also took note of the submissions by Earthjustice Legal Defense Fund; Association of Arab-American University Graduates; International Motor Vehicle Inspection Committee; National Bar Association, Inc.; Resources for the Future; World Alliance of Young Men’s Christian Associations; and the International Electrotechnical Commission.
In further action, the Committee took note of reports by Physicians for Human Rights; Women, Law and Development International; Friends World Committee for Consultation; Medecins Sans Frontieres (International); Lutheran World Council; Union International des Avocats; Arab Organization for Human Rights; and the International Federation of Building and Wood Workers.

Turning to new applications, the Committee took up a request by the Nippon Foundation (see document E/C.2/2002/R.2/Add.5) for special consultative status with ECOSOC, recommending roster status for the Japan-based national NGO.
It deferred an application for general consultative status to the Brussels-based International Crisis Group (document E/C.2/2002/R.2/Add.3) following a delegation’s request for more time to consult with its capital.
When the Committee meets at 10 a.m. tomorrow, it will consider its methods of work as well as implementation of ECOSOC resolution 1996/31.
