GENERAL COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS INCLUSION OF ADDITIONAL ITEM ON AGENDA

OF FIFTY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY SESSION

The General Committee recommended this morning that the General Assembly include an item entitled “South American Zone of Peace and Cooperation” in its agenda for the current session and that the item be considered directly in plenary meeting.

It also recommended that the Assembly defer its consideration of the item entitled “Question of the Comorian island of Mayotte” to the fifty-eighth session and that the item be included in the provisional agenda for that session.

The representative of the Comoros said his delegation was committed to the territorial integrity of the island of Mayotte and that a settlement of the question could only be brought about through the United Nations.

Portugal's representative requested the deferral in a letter to the Secretary-General (document A/57/232).

The representative of Peru requested the inclusion of the item on the South American Zone of Peace and Cooperation in the Assembly's agenda, noting that the creation of the Zone contributed to the strengthening of world peace and cooperation.

The General Committee will meet again on a date to be announced.
