COMMITTEE ON FINAL REVIEW OF UN NEW AGENDA FOR DEVELOPMENT OF AFRICA

ADOPTS DRAFT REPORT, REQUESTS ADDITIONAL MEETING TO FINALIZE WORK

The Ad Hoc Committee of the Whole on the Final Review and Appraisal of the United Nations New Agenda for the Development of Africa in the 1990s (UN-NADAF) met this afternoon to adopt the its draft report (document A/AC.251/L.2) and to adopt a decision to request the General Assembly for authorization to hold one additional meeting of the Committee.

The report of the Ad Hoc Committee was adopted as a whole, as orally amended.  As there was no consensus on the text of the related resolution, paragraph 17 of the report would request the General Assembly to authorize the holding of the additional meeting, while paragraph 18 would contain the text of the related resolution, once adopted.

Rapporteur Marcel Fortuna Biato (Brazil) introduced the draft report of the Ad Hoc Committee.  The report consisted of six chapters, the first three of which were mostly procedural.  He also read out the text of Chapter VI of the report, whereby the Ad Hoc Committee decided to request the General Assembly to authorize the Committee to hold one additional meeting, subject to availability of services, on an exceptional basis, in order to complete its work.

The Committee will meet again formally at a time to be announced in order to adopt the text of the resolution, once work on it has been finalized.
