NEW AGENDA COMMITTEE FOR AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT TO REVIEW

PROPOSED DRAFT IN INFORMAL CONSULTATIONS

The General Assembly's Ad Hoc Committee for the Final Review and Appraisal of the Implementation of the United Nations New Agenda for the Development of Africa in the 1990s met briefly this afternoon to receive a draft by which, among other provisions, the initiative would be brought to a close.

The draft was introduced by the representative of Venezuela (on behalf of the "Group of 77" developing countries and China).  He said the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) was the appropriate vehicle for reaching sustainable development and attaining the Millennium Goals in Africa.

While expressing disappointment at the limited progress in realizing the objective of the United Nations New Agenda for the Development of Africa in the 1990s, the text endorses the recommendation of the Secretary-General that NEPAD be the policy framework around which the international community, including the United Nations system, should concentrate its efforts for Africa's development.

The Chairman of the Committee said the Committee would resume its work in immediate informal meetings to allow "uninhibited exchange of ideas" on the text of the draft.
