ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL TO CONSIDER ESTABLISHING GROUP
TO EXAMINE HUMANITARIAN, ECONOMIC NEEDS IN GUINEA-BISSAU
The Economic and Social Council decided this morning that its President, Ivan Š imonović of Croatia, would hold consultations on setting up an ad hoc advisory group to examine humanitarian and economic needs in Guinea-Bissau, at the request of that country.
The decision was based on a resolution adopted in July (document E/2002/L.12), deciding to set up such groups for African countries emerging from conflict. In Guinea-Bissau, the group would review support programmes and prepare recommendations for long-term assistance through relief, rehabilitation, reconstruction and development.
Under further terms of the July resolution, the Council would consult with the authorities of Guinea-Bissau as well as representatives of relevant national, subregional, regional and international organizations and make recommendations to the Council.
The Council will meet again at 3 p.m. to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the signing of the General Peace Agreement for Mozambique.
