NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF GUINEA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Mamady Traoré, the new Permanent Representative of Guinea to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.


Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Traoré served from 1998 to 2002 as his country's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Nigeria.  He joined Guinea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1980.  His first assignment, from 1980 to 1984, was as head of the Africa and Organization for African Unity Division in the Department of Political and Cultural Affairs.  From 1986 to 1988, he served as head of the Asia and Middle East Division, and from 1988 to 1989 as head of the Africa and Asia Division.  From 1989 to 1992, Mr. Traoré held the position of Counsellor at his country's Embassy in Tripoli, Libya.  From 1992 to 1993, he served as Chargé d'affaires.


Before his appointment to diplomatic service, from 1975 to 1980, Mr. Traoré held teaching positions at the Teacher Training College of Economy and the Economy High School of Lola, Yomou and Conakry. 


Mr. Traoré earned a degree in higher education from the Polytechnic Institute of Conakry in 1975.  From 1985 to 1986, he received a diploma in diplomatic studies from Oxford University.  In 1988, Mr. Traoré received diplomas in diplomatic studies from several organizations, including the International Institute of Public Administration in Paris, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in Geneva, and the European Economic Community in Brussels.


Born in 1952 in Sareya, Mr. Traoré is married with four children.
