Biographical Note

NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SLOVENIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Roman Kirn, the new Permanent Representative of Slovenia to the United Nations, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan on 22 July.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Kirn served for two years as the Permanent Representative of Slovenia to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna.

Previously, Mr. Kirn enjoyed a distinguished career in the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  From 1996 to 2000, he was State Under-Secretary of the Ministry and Director of its Multilateral Relations Department.  He held the latter post for the first time from 1991 to 1992.

From 1992 to 1996, Mr. Kirn served as Minister Counsellor at the Slovenian Embassy to the Czech Republic; and from 1986 to 1991, as Assistant Chairman of the Committee for International Relations of Slovenia.

Mr. Kirn has also held positions on the Committee for International Relations of Slovenia (1984-1986), at the Yugoslav Embassy in Burma (1980-1984), and on the Committee for Foreign Economic Relations of Slovenia (1978-1980).

Educated at the University of Ljubljana, Mr. Kirn received his Bachelor of Arts in International Relations in 1976.

Born in 1952 in Trbovlje, Slovenia, Mr. Kirn is married and has two children.
