NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF YEMEN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Abdullah M. Al-Saidi, the new Permanent Representative of Yemen to the United Nations, presented his credentials on 22 July to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Al-Saidi served as his country's Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1999. From 1997 to 1998, he was the Director of Law and Treaties Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and from 1996 to 1998, he held the position of General Director of the Research Department in the Technical Division of the Presidential Office.
Among his other government positions, Mr. Al-Saidi served as a member of the National Arbitration Committee with Eritrea in 1996. In 1995, he served as Counsellor in the Office of the Foreign Minister. From 1986 to 1988, he was Director of the Deputy Foreign Minister's Office. In 1997, he was a member of the Yemeni delegation to the United Nations Mission.
During his tenure with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Al-Saidi served in several departments, including the Political Department in 1986, the Department of Economic Affairs in 1985, and the Legal Department in 1984. From 1990 to 1995, he was a member of his country's Mission to the United Nations. From 1990 to 1991, he was a member of Yemen’s delegation on the Security Council. From 1988 to 1990, he was assigned to Yemen’s Embassy in Berlin.
Mr. Al-Saidi received a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1975 from Long Island University, New York. In 1982, he earned a Master of Arts degree in political science from Columbia University.
Married with three children, Mr. Al-Saidi was born in 1947 in Beit Al-Saidi, Shair.
