Biographical Note


NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BOTSWANA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Alfred Uyapo Majaye Dube, the new Permanent Representative of Botswana to the United Nations, presented his credentials on 22 July to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.


Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Dube served as Botswana’s Special Envoy on Diamonds, based in Washington, D.C., with responsibility for the United States and Europe.  From 1996 to 1997, Mr. Dube served as Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China and concurrently as Ambassador to the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, the Republic of Korea and Japan.  From 1997 and 1998, he was High Commissioner in Malaysia and Singapore.


Between April 1993 and August 1996, he was High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, also serving as Ambassador to Sweden between 1989 and 1993, and concurrently as Ambassador to Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland, and the Soviet Union.


Mr. Dube, who holds an Associate of the Library Association diploma from the Polytechnic of North London (1971) and a Bachelor of Arts degree in government from the University of Essex, United Kingdom (1977), joined the Botswana Civil Service in 1967.  Also among his positions in government service, from 1978 to 1979, he served as Head of the Economic Affairs Unit of the Department of External Affairs.  From 1979 to 1980, he was First Secretary in the Botswana Embassy and Mission to the European Communities in Brussels.  Between June and August 1980, he was Head of Chancery at the Botswana Commission in London.


He served as Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Water Affairs from 1981 to 1983, and as Minister Counsellor at the Botswana Embassy in Brussels in 1983.


Married with three children, Mr. Dube was born on 8 June 1949.
