Biographical Note

NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF INDIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Vijay Kunhianandan Nambiar, the new Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Before his current appointment, Mr. Nambiar was India’s High Commissioner to Pakistan from August 2000.  Prior to that, he held a number of diplomatic assignments, including that of Ambassador to China (1996-2000), High Commissioner to Malaysia (1993-1996), Ambassador to Afghanistan (1990-1992) and Ambassador to Algeria (1985-1988).

From March 1988 to October 1990, Mr. Nambiar served as Director-General  (East Asia) in the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.  Between April 1982 and December 1985, he was a Director in the Ministry of External Affairs with responsibility over United Nations, Commonwealth and Non-Aligned Movement affairs.  He served as First Secretary/Counselor in India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations from 1979 to 1982.

Married with two daughters, Mr. Nambiar joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1967.
