Commission for Social Development
Thirty-ninth Session
10th Meeting (AM)
DRAFT RESOLUTION ON VOLUNTEERING INTRODUCED IN COMMISSION FOR SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
The Commission for Social Development met this morning to hear the introduction of a draft resolution on “Volunteering and social development”.
By the terms of the text, the Commission would emphasize that support for voluntary actions does not imply support for government downsizing or for replacing paid employment.
The Commission would, by other terms, encourage States to support voluntary action by creating a favourable environment. It would encourage United Nations bodies to further support voluntary action for social development, by further terms of the text.
Introducing the draft, the representative of Japan expressed the hope that the Commission would approve it without a vote.
Before adjourning this morning's meeting, Commission Chair Faith Innerarity (Jamaica) drew attention to a draft resolution introduced yesterday on “Enhancing social protection and reducing vulnerability in a globalizing world”.
The Commission’s next meeting will be announced in the United Nations Journal.
