SECRETARY-GENERAL CALLS FOR GENEROUS RESPONSE TO AID APPEAL
ON BEHALF OF EL SALVADOR EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS
The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:
The Secretary-General calls upon the international donor community to respond generously to the United Nations inter-agency appeal launched today in San Salvador, together with the Government of El Salvador, following the tragic earthquake of 13 January 2001.
He notes that a timely response to this appeal will help reduce the vulnerability of the affected population as the rainy season approaches, by ensuring that basic needs for shelter, food, water and sanitation, and health services are provided.
