SECRETARY-GENERAL EXTENDS CONDOLENCES FOLLOWING EL SALVADOR EARTHQUAKE


The following statement was issued by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan on 14 January:


The Secretary-General extends his deepest condolences to the Government and people of El Salvador for the loss of life and property that has occurred as a result of Saturday’s earthquake.  He wishes to assure them, as well as neighboring countries, that the United Nations will extend all efforts within its means to help the affected populations.  He wishes to thank governments and private individuals who are assisting in the relief activities, and appeals to the international community as a whole to be generous in its response.
