DENNIS MCNAMARA APPOINTED DEPUTY SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE


OF SECRETARY-GENERAL FOR EAST TIMOR


The Secretary-General has decided to appoint Dennis McNamara as his Deputy Special Representative for East Timor.  Mr. McNamara will take over from

Jean-Christian Cady, who will be leaving at the end of June.


Mr. McNamara, a national of New Zealand, is currently United Nations Special Coordinator on Internal Displacement, and has worked for 25 years with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).


Mr. McNamara previously served as a Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Kosovo, heading the mission’s Humanitarian Pillar, an area for which the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees had the lead responsibility.


In UNHCR he was Director of the Division of International Protection from 1994 to 1999.  He has also served as Director of the Human Rights Component of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC); as the Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Representative for Humanitarian Assistance for Kampuchea based in Bangkok; as UNHCR Regional Legal Adviser in Hong Kong; and as UNHCR Deputy Regional Representative in Malaysia.
