NEW YORK FESTIVALS/UNDPI PUBLIC SERVICE ADVERTISING AWARDS

TO BE PRESENTED AT INTERNATIONAL ADVERTISING AWARDS SHOW

                 Public-service Advertisements about Refugees,

Sex Trafficking, Domestic Violence to Receive Awards

Advertising agencies from the Netherlands and the Philippines will be honoured for public service advertising on Friday, 2 February 2001, when the UNDPI Awards are presented at the 2000 International Advertising AwardsShow at the Marriott Marquis Hotel.  Shashi Tharoor, Interim Head, Department of Public Information, will speak at the awards presentation.

The UNDPI Awards are presented annually and are jointly sponsored by the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI) and the New York Festivals.  They were established in 1990 to honour public service advertising that best exemplifies the ideals and goals of the United Nations.

This year's panel of judges reviewed work dealing with such United Nations-related issues as protection of refugees, endangered species, landmines, the fight against drugs, domestic violence and sex trafficking.  The judges selected three public service advertisements/campaigns -- two television and one print  -- to receive awards.

TBWA/Campaign Company, the Netherlands, will receive the Gold UNDPI Award for a television advertising campaign about refugees, entitled "Spanish food/One day later/Hiking", which they produced for the Dutch Refugee Foundation.  Ace Saatchi & Saatchi, the Philippines, will receive the Silver UNDPI Award for "Package", a television advertisement about sex trafficking, which they produced for Gabriela.  The Bronze UNDPI Award will go to BBDO/Guerro Ortega, the Philippines, for "Make-up", a print advertisement on the subject of domestic violence, which they produced for the Kalakasan-Women's Media Circle.

In addition to the winners, the following companies will be honoured as finalists:  Bartle Bogle Hegarty (Singapore), del Rivero Messianu Advertising (United States), McCann-Erickson (Switzerland), and Springer & Jacoby Werbung GmbH (Germany).
