GENERAL COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS THAT GENERAL ASSEMBLY INCLUDEIN AGENDA

ITEM ON APPOINTMENT OF SECRETARY-GENERAL

The General Committee this morning recommended that the General Assembly include on its agenda an additional item, entitled “Appointment of the Secretary-General of the United Nations”, to be considered directly in a plenary meeting.

The request for inclusion was introduced by the representative of Nigeria (on behalf of the African Group), who explained to the Committee that it was necessary to inscribe the item on the agenda to enable the Assembly to receive and consider during the current session the recommendations of the Security Council on the matter.  The Security Council is scheduled to consider the appointment of the Secretary-General on Wednesday, 27 June.

The report of the General Committee on today’s action will be considered by the General Assembly at 3 p.m. today.
