(Reissued as received.)

GENEVA, 19 July (UN Information Service) -- The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) held a brief meeting this afternoon and formally took note of four reports submitted to it by its subsidiary bodies concerning sustainable development, population and development, statistics and cartography.

The Council decided to take note of the report of the Commission on Sustainable Development (document E/2001/29) on its ninth session.  The report brought to the attention of the Council several issues, among them, energy for sustainable development, protection of the atmosphere, transportation, information for decision-making and participation, and international cooperation for an enabling environment.

The Council decided to take note of the report of the Statistical Commission (document E/2001/24) on its thirty-second session and approved dates, the agenda and documentation for the Commission's thirty-third session.  The next session would be held from 5 to 8 March 2002 in New York.  The report also provided economic statistics, and enumerated activities not classified by field, including international economic and social classifications, and a review of existing statistical programmes in relation to United Nations special years and observances.

The Council decided to take note of the report of the Commission on Population and Development (document E/2001/25) on the thirty-fourth session; and approved the provisional agenda for the thirty-fifth session of the Commission.  Further, the report detailed follow-up actions to the recommendations of the International Conference on Population and Development, and highlighted national experience in population matters.

The Council decided to take note of the report of the Secretary-General on the Seventh United Nations Regional Cartographic Conference for the Americas (document E/2001/11), which contained recommendations, including the convening of the Eighth United Nations Regional Cartographic Conference, and implementation by the Secretary-General of the other recommendations of the Conference.  The report recommended that the Eighth Conference should be held no later than 2005.

The Council also decided to take note of the report of the Secretary-General on the above-mentioned conference.

The Council will reconvene at 10 a.m. on Friday, 20 July, to continue with its general segment and start debating regional cooperation under the theme “regional perspective on globalization:  an opportunity for catching up or a risk of falling behind in the development process”.
