Biographical Note

NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF PHILIPPINES PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

The new Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations, Alfonso Tiaoqui Yuchengco, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Yuchengco was his country’s Special Envoy to Greater China, Japan and Korea in addition to having been Chairman and Director of numerous private sector companies.

Other diplomatic posts held by Mr. Yuchengco include, from 1998 to 2000, Presidential Assistant on matters related to the Asia-Pacific Economic Community.  From 1995 to 1998, he served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to  Japan and previously held that latter position regarding China, from 1986 to 1988.

His extensive career as an executive in the private sector began in 1949.

A certified public accountant since 1947, he also taught accounting at the

Far Eastern University and University of the East in the Philippines in 1946 and 1947, respectively.

Mr. Yuchengco received a Bachelor of Science in commerce from the Far Eastern University in 1946, followed by graduate studies in business administration at Columbia University.  He received doctorates in business management and humanities, honoris causa, from the De La Salle University and the University of Baguio, respectively, followed by many other honorary doctorates.

Born in 1923 in Manila, Philippines, Mr. Yuchengco is a widower.  He has eight children.
