NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SAINT LUCIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Earl Stephen Huntley, the new Permanent Representative of Saint Lucia to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Huntley served as Permanent Secretary in his Government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade from 1997 to the present. From 1996 to 1997, he served as the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs.
Mr. Huntley was Coordinator, Programme on Political Unification, Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS Secretariat) from 1990 to 1996. Before that, he served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1978 to 1989, first as Assistant Secretary and then later as Permanent Secretary. He was a Mid-Career Fellow at St. Anthony’s College, Oxford University from 1989 to 1990.
During his tenure as Permanent Secretary in the Foreign Ministry,
Mr. Huntley carried out several special diplomatic assignments. Among them, he served as Chief Negotiator on the Saint Lucia Air Services Negotiating Committee and was a member of the Saint Lucia-Venezuela Mixed Commission.
Mr. Huntley represented Saint Lucia at a number of regional and international conferences, including those of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the World Trade Organization.
From 1976 to 1978, Mr. Huntley was Communications Coordinator, Caribbean Conference of Churches, Barbados. Prior to that, he was Current Affairs Commentator and Evening News Editor, Radio Caribbean, Saint Lucia. From 1971 to 1974, he was a teacher at Morne Secondary School and Saint Lucia “A” Level College.
Mr. Huntley earned both a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and English as well as a post-graduate diploma in International Relations from the University of the West Indies.
Mr. Huntley was born on 17 April 1948.
