NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF PERU PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Oswaldo de Rivero, the new Permanent Representative of Peru to the United Nations, presented his credentials to the Secretary-General today.
Mr. de Rivero was previously his country's Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization and to international organizations in Geneva. He had also been a member of the delegation of Peru to the United Nations Security Council.
From 1986 to 1993, Mr. de Rivero was the head of the Peruvian delegation to the Uruguay round negotiations, and, for part of that time, from 1989 to 1992, was head of the Peruvian delegation to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.
In 1991, he was the President of the “Group of 77” developing countries in Geneva. The year before, he was President of the fourth Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference, also in Geneva. At Harare, Zimbabwe, in 1986, Mr. de Rivero was the President of the Economic Commission at the Summit of Non-Aligned Countries.
In Peru, Mr. de Rivero was Secretary-General to the President of the Republic from 1974 to 1978. He is a founding member of the Peruvian Centre for International Studies. The author of three books about development, Mr. de Rivero holds a degree in law from the Universidad Católica in Lima, and has a Master’s in International Relations from the Diplomatic Academy in Lima. He holds a diploma in international trade policy, and has studied international development law at the Institut des hautes études internationales in Geneva.
Born on 2 August 1936, Mr. de Rivero is married and has two daughters.
