FUAD MUBARAK AL-HINAI OF OMAN ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF THIRD COMMITTEE
Fuad Mubarak Al-Hinai, who was elected Chairman of the Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) for the General Assembly’s fifty-sixth session this afternoon, has been the permanent representative of Oman to the United Nations since August 1998. He began his association with the United Nations in August 1974, when he served as Second Secretary/First Secretary of the permanent Mission of Oman to the United Nations. He held that position until July 1978.
Prior to his appointment to the United Nations in 1998, Mr. Al-Hinai was Deputy Chief of the International Conferences and Organizations Department in Oman’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was first appointed Deputy Chief in
1982 and held that position again from November 1984 to December 1986. He had previously served the Mission in a number of other capacities, including Deputy Chief/Training Department, and as Second Secretary.
From December 1986 to August 1992, he served as Counsellor/Charge d’Affaires of Oman to Brunei Darussalam. He was First Secretary in the Permanent Mission of Oman to the United Nations Office in Geneva (1983-1984) and Oman’s Embassy in Egypt (1979-1982).
Mr. Al-Hinai was elected Rapporteur of the Third Committee in 1977. He has also attended many United Nations conferences and meetings, including: the Diplomatic Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Establishment of an International Criminal Court, Rome, Italy; the 1995 World Summit for Social Development; and the fourth, fifth and sixth sessions of the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea, in New York. In 1975, he attended the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and in 1983, he attended the International Conference on the Question of Palestine, held in Geneva.
Mr. Al-Hinai holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Kuwait. He was born in 1951 and is married with two children.
