Biographical Note


NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF AUSTRALIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

John Dauth, the new Permanent Representative of Australia to the United Nations, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan today. 


Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Dauth had served as Deputy Secretary in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade since 1998.  Before that, he held the position of First Assistant Secretary in the South and South East Asia Division.


From 1993 to 1996, Mr. Dauth served as Australia’s High Commissioner to Malaysia.  Prior to that, following his appointment as Senior Private Secretary to Foreign Minister Gareth Evans, Mr. Dauth was First Assistant Secretary in the International Security Division in Canberra. 


Mr. Dauth was Consul General in Noumea from 1986 to 1987, and Assistant Secretary in the Public Affairs Branch of the Department of Foreign Affairs from 1987 to 1989.  He had served as Chargéd’Affaires in the Australian Embassy in Tehran, as well as headed the Commonwealth and Multilateral Organization Section in the Department of Foreign Affairs in Canberra.


From 1977 until 1980, Mr. Dauth was the Assistant Press Secretary to Queen Elizabeth II and Press Secretary to the Prince of Wales.  Before that, he was appointed First Secretary and Deputy Head of Mission in Islamabad. 


Mr. Dauth joined the then Department of External Affairs in 1969 as an External Affairs Officer, later serving as a Foreign Affairs Officer in Lagos. 


Born on 9 April 1947, Mr. Dauth was educated at the University of Sydney.
