Biographical Note

NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF FORMER YUGOSLAV REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA

PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO SECRETARY-GENERAL

Srgjan Kerim, the new Permanent Representative of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Before his current appointment, from 2000 to 2001, Mr. Kerim was Minister for Foreign Affairs.  From 1994 to 2000, he was his country’s Ambassador to Germany, as well as to Liechtenstein and to Switzerland from 1995 to 2000.  He was Vice-President of the “Copechim-France” Company in Paris from 1992 to 1994.

During the period 1989-1991, Mr. Kerim served as Assistant Minister and Spokesman at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.  Earlier, from 1986 to 1989, he was Minister for Foreign Economic Relations in the Government of the Republic of Macedonia.

From 1972 to 1991, Mr. Kerim was Assistant and Professor at the International Economic Relations Chair of the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and Visiting Professor at the University in Hamburg, Germany, and the University in New York.  From 1976 to 1978, he was a member of the Presidency of the Youth Federation of Yugoslavia and President of the Foreign Policy Committee.

Mr. Kerim graduated from the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade in 1971 and obtained his Ph.D. in International Economics in 1982.  Born on 12 December 1948 in Skopje, Mr. Kerim is married and has three children.
