Biographical Note
NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MYANMAR PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

The new Permanent Representative of Myanmar, Kyaw Tint Swe, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Before his appointment, Mr. Swe held the position of Director-General of the International Organizations and Economic Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1997 and 1998, he served concurrently as Deputy Director-General of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Secretary of the National Commission for Environmental Affairs.
Among other positions Mr. Swe has held in government service, he has served as Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Myanmar Embassy in Tokyo from 1994 to 1997 and as Minister-Counsellor and Deputy Permanent Representative to the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) at the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok from 1993 to 1994. From 1990 to 1993, he served both as Director of the Economic Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Secretary of the National Commission for Environmental Affairs.
From 1968 -- when he began his diplomatic career -– to 1990, Mr. Swe held various positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in the Myanmar Embassies in Israel, Malaysia and Germany. Mr. Swe was also a member of the Myanmar delegation to the General Assembly, as well as to numerous international meetings, including the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), the World Conference on Human Rights, and the World Conference on Women.
Mr. Swe received a bachelor's degree from the University of Yangon and a post-graduate diploma in International Relations and Development at the Institute of Social Studies in the Hague.
Born on 19 March 1945, Mr. Swe is married and has two children.
