Biographical Note


NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF TUNISIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Noureddine Mejdoub, the new Permanent Representative of Tunisia to the United Nations, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.


Prior to his appointment, Mr. Mejdoub served as Ambassador of Tunisia in Washington, D.C., from 1997 to 2000.  From 1992 to 1997, he was Tunisia's Ambassador in Tokyo.  In 1991-1992, Mr. Mejdoub was Secretary of State to the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Tunisia.  In 1990, he was appointed Diplomatic Counselor and Chairman of the National Committee on Tunisia's Relations with the European Economic Community.  From 1980 to 1989, he held ambassadorships in Rome and Prague.


Mr. Mejdoub, who started his diplomatic career in 1960, has served in various capacities at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tunis, including as Director of Political Affairs for Europe and America from 1977 to 1980.  Earlier, in 1970, he was Deputy Director for Political Affairs at the Ministry.  From 1973 to 1977, he served as both Chargé d'Affaires and Ambassador in Vienna and also as Tunisia's representative to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).  From 1971 to 1973,  Mr. Mejdoub served at the Tunisian Embassy in Paris as Minister Plenipotentiary and Deputy Chief of Mission.


Earlier in his career, Mr. Mejdoub served as Press Officer at the Tunisian Embassy in London from 1963 to 1965, and as Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1962 to 1963.


Mr. Mejdoub has a Ph.D. in political science from the Institute for Political Sciences.


Born on 20 January 1935 in Tunis, Mr. Mejdoub is married and has three children.
