PREPARATORY COMMITTEE FOR HIGH-LEVEL FINANCING FOR DEVELOPMENT EVENT CONCLUDES FIRST SUBSTANTIVE SESSION
20001127Committee Approves Text on Substantive Preparatory Process and Event
The Preparatory Committee for the High-level International Intergovernmental Event on Financing for Development concluded its first substantive session this afternoon by approving, as orally revised, a draft decision on preparations for the substantive preparatory process and the Event.
The decision, document A/AC.257/L.4/Rev.1, contains a draft resolution recommended to the General Assembly for its adoption, which would have the Assembly decide that the high-level event should be scheduled for the first quarter of 2002, at a date to be agreed upon, and extend its invitation to interested countries to consider hosting or confirming existing offers to host the event.
The Assembly would also decide that the Preparatory Committee should hold a final substantive session from 14 to 25 January 2002, on the understanding that the second substantive session will be held from 12 to 23 February 2001 and the third substantive session will be held from 30 April to 11 May 2001.
In addition, the Assembly would request the Secretary-General to address a letter to all governments further sensitizing them to the high profile and high level of participation that the substantive preparatory process and the high- level event deserve.
The Committee also approved the draft provisional agenda for its second session, to be held from 12 to 23 February 2001. The agenda includes review of the inputs to the substantive preparatory process and the Event as well as preparation of the outcome of the Event.

The Committees report on its organizational and first substantive session, presented by its Rapporteur Hazem Fahmy (Egypt), was also adopted this afternoon.
The representatives of Kenya, Sudan, Cuba, France, Chile and Saint Lucia made comments and/or posed questions. Mauricio Escanero (Mexico), who served as facilitator for the draft decision, made a statement prior to its adoption. Oscar de Rojas, Executive Coordinator for the Financing for Development Secretariat, replied to questions.
The meeting was chaired by the Committees co-Chairman, Jorgen Bojer (Denmark). Asda Jayanama (Thailand) served as the other co-Chairman, and John Davison (United States) and Jorge Valdez (Peru) as Vice-Chairmen.
