SECRETARY-GENERAL URGES GOVERNMENT OF FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF YUGOSLAVIA TO TAKE NECESSARY MEASURES TO ENSURE SECURITY OF PRISONERS

The following statement was issued today by the Office of the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General has been informed by his Special Representative in Kosovo of the unrest in several detention facilities in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, including in Nis. The Secretary-General urges the Government of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to take all necessary measures to ensure the security and well-being of all prisoners, and in particular, the Kosovo Albanian detainees.
