NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF DOMINICAN REPUBLIC PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

The new Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic, Pedro Padilla Tonos, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Wednesday, 1 November.

Mr. Padilla Tonos, who began his diplomatic career in 1961, has served as his country's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. He has also been Under- Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and the Director of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences of the State Secretariat for Foreign Affairs.

Among his other appointments, he has served as his country's Ambassador to the United Nations and to the Food and Agricultural Organization, as well as to its embassies in Italy, Venezuela, the United Kingdom and Portugal.

Mr. Padilla Tonos holds two doctorates; one in law from Santo Domingo Autonomous University, and the other in political sciences from the Pro-Deo Social Studies University in Rome, Italy.

He was Professor of Public International Law and American Public International Law at the Santo Domingo Autonomous University and the Pedro Henriques Urena University, Santo Domingo.

Mr. Padilla Tonos speaks Spanish, Italian and English and is also proficient in French and Portuguese.

Born on 18 January 1937 in Barahona in the Dominican Republic, Mr. Padilla Tonos is married with two children.
