SECURITY COUNCIL REFERS YUGOSLAV APPLICATION FOR UN MEMBERSHIP TO COMMITTEE ON ADMISSION OF NEW MEMBERS

20001031

The Security Council this afternoon decided to refer the application of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia for membership in the United Nations to the Committee on the Admission of New Members.

The Committee is expected to meet later today to consider the application. The request for admission was submitted by the President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Vojislav Kostunica, in his letter to the Secretary-General dated 27 October (document A/55/528-S/2000/1043). In that letter, President Kostunica requests the admission of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to membership in the United Nations in the wake of the fundamental democratic changes that have taken place in that country.

The meeting was called to order at 12:17 p.m. and adjourned at 12:20 p.m.
