THIRD COMMITTEE ELECTS TWO VICE-CHAIRPERSONS, RAPPORTEUR; BEGINS SUBSTANTIVE WORK FOR FIFTY-FIFTH SESSION
20000929CORRECTION
On page 4 of Press Release GA/SHC/3573 of 25 September, the statement of the Third Committee Chairwoman should read, as follows:
YVONNE GITTENS-JOSEPH (Trinidad and Tobago), the Committee Chairwoman, made an introductory statement. She recalled that at the Millennium Summit, world leaders had emphasized the importance of the dignity and worth of the human person, respect for human rights and equal rights for mean and women. They had made a commitment to social progress as measured by better living standards and freedom from want and fear.
Yet millions of people were facing a daily battle against poverty and its attendant ills, she said. Those included unemployment, conflict, lack of respect for human rights and discrimination because of race or gender. The unfortunate legacy of the twentieth century was that millions lived in unacceptable social conditions. They remained untouched by the achievements of science and technology. The people of the twenty-first century must be those whose fate would change. Those who now lived in despair must enjoy a life of dignity.
The issues before the Committee impacted directly on the lives of the worlds people, she concluded. That concern should be reflected in the decisions the Committee approved during this session.
