NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATITVE OF SAINT KITTS AND NEVIS PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Joseph R. Christmas, the new Permanent Representative of Saint Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Christmas advised his country's Prime Minister on foreign policy, following his retirement in 1996 after 17 years of service at the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

Mr. Christmas started his tenure at UNICEF as a Senior Project Officer for Water and Environmental Sanitation, based in Mozambique, from 1978 to 1983. From 1984 to 1992, he worked at headquarters in New York, advancing from Senior Programme Officer to Global Chief of the water supply and environmental sanitation sector. From 1993 until his retirement, he served as UNICEF Resident Representative in, first, Angola, and then Kenya.

He received his Master of Science in hydrogeology from London University in 1971. From 1972 to 1977, he managed the National Water Department of Saint Kitts and Nevis. In 1977, he also received his Ph.D. in hydrogeology from the University of the West Indies, Jamaica. He holds a Certificate of Education from Erdiston College, Barbados (1964); a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of the West Indies (1969); and a diploma in Sanitary Engineering from the University of North Carolina, United States (1973).

Mr. Christmas was born in Saint Kitts on 7 February 1940.
