SEBASTIÃO SALGADOS CHILDREN AND MIGRATIONS - NEW PHOTO EXHIBITION AT VISITORS LOBBY, 27 SEPTEMBER30 OCTOBER
20000921An exhibition of the work of internationally renowned photographer Sebastião Salgado will open at the United Nations General Assembly Visitors Lobby on 27 September, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The images in this unique exhibition are drawn from Mr. Salgados recently published books The Children and Migrations (Aperture, 2000). Mr. Salgado will sign books at the United Nations bookstore that afternoon from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The exhibition will feature 90 portraits of refugee children and 15 mural prints selected from the two books, as well as a DVD presentation of over 1,200 images from the Migrations project.
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the Executive Director of the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF), Carol Bellamy, will introduce the event. Susan Sarandon, a Special Representative for UNICEF, will also take part in the opening event of the exhibition and will invite those attending to a special screening of The Spectre of Hope, a documentary film on the work of Mr. Salgado, directed by Paul Carlin and produced by Minerva Pictures and Home Box Office with Executive Producer Tim Robbins.
These images tell us a story of our times. We must not remain indifferent; we cannot afford to run away, Mr. Salgado said of the exhibition. The portraits feature children from more than 18 countries, from Rwanda, India, and Turkey to Iraq, Viet-Nam and Angola. Ethnic cleansing, political instability, war, and extreme poverty have displaced these children. These unforgettable photographs show the faces of young people who bear the burden of an uncertain future.
Sebastião Salgado has held major exhibitions in over 22 countries, published 10 books and has received several major photographic awards from institutions in France, Germany, Holland and the United States.
Journalists and media wishing to cover the exhibition and the opening event must submit a request for United Nations access on letterhead to: United Nations Media Accreditation & Liaison Unit, fax (212) 963-4642. To verify receipt of fax please call (212) 963-5934/7164. Two forms of photo ID will be required to collect a press pass from the UNITAR Building at First Avenue and 45th Street.
