THIRD COMMITTEE ELECTS ONE VICE-CHAIR; DEFERS FILLING REMAINING SEATS
20000915Substantive Work to Begin 25 September
This morning during its organizational session, the Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) elected Sarah Paterson of New Zealand as Vice-Chairperson. As the African, Asian and Eastern European Groups still had not submitted their candidates for the Bureau of the Third Committee, the other two Chairpersons and the Committees Rapporteur will be elected at the first substantive meeting.
After a brief recess and informal consultations, the Committee then adopted its programme of work for the current session (document A/C.3/55/L.1), scheduled to conclude on 10 November.
Committee Chairwoman Yvonne Gittens-Joseph (Trinidad and Tobago) made a short introductory statement welcoming the Committee members. She said that teamwork and broad cooperation would allow the members to consider all the issues before them successfully and expeditiously.
During the coming session, the Committee will consider agenda items related to the advancement of women (item 107), crime prevention and drug control (items 105 and 106), the situation of refugees and displaced persons (item 109), racism and related intolerance (item 112), the right of peoples to self-determination (item 113), the rights of children (item 110) and human rights situations (item 114). In accordance with its evolving practice upon presentation of reports, the Committee will hold interactive dialogues with rapporteurs, special representatives, senior Secretariat officials and with the United Nations High Commissioners for both Human Rights and Refugees.
The Committee will begin its substantive work at 10 a.m. on Monday, 25 September, by taking up questions related to social development, including the world social situation and youth, ageing, disabled persons and the family (items 103 and 104).
