JAPANESE TEA FOR PEACE CEREMONY TO BE HELD AT HEADQUARTERS
20000912A Japanese "Tea for Peace" ceremony will take place on Thursday, 14 September, at 12:30 p.m. in the North Delegates' Lounge.
Yukio Satoh, the Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, will host the occasion. Soshitsu Sen, Fifteenth Generation Grand Master of the 400-year-old Urasenke Tradition of Tea, will preside over the ceremony.
The traditional Japanese Way of Tea, or Chado, is derived from Zen Buddhism and based on the four principles of harmony, respect, purity and tranquillity.
The tea ceremony, sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations and the Japan Foundation, is being held in honour of the Millennium session of the General Assembly, with the hope that those participating will be united in their desire for a more peaceful world in the twenty-first century.
