SECURITY COUNCIL TO MEET ON 7 SEPTEMBER AT HEAD OF STATE/GOVERNMENT LEVEL TO COINCIDE WITH MILLENIUM SUMMIT
20000831The 15 members of the United Nations Security Council have scheduled a public meeting at the Head of State/Head of Government level on 7 September to coincide with the Millennium Summit of the United Nations that will take place at United Nations Headquarters from 6 to 8 September 2000. The Council meeting will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. and is expected to be presided over by President Alpha Oumar Konaré of Mali. Mali will assume the rotating presidency of the Security Council for the month of September.
As announced by the President of the Council for the month of August, Ambassador Hasmy Agam of Malaysia, the theme of the meeting will be "Ensuring an effective role of the Security Council in the maintenance of international peace and security, particularly in Africa". President Konaré will give a press conference following the meeting at 4 p.m. in Conference Room 2.
The current members of the Security Council are: Argentina, Bangladesh, Canada, China, France, Jamaica, Malaysia, Mali, Namibia, Netherlands, Russian Federation, Tunisia, Ukraine, United Kingdom and the United States.
Media arrangements for the duration of the Summit will apply to coverage of the Security Council meeting, with some variations. For example, restrictions on the movement of media correspondents will be in effect in the Security Council area; no media will be allowed past the security points unless they are in a pre-designated area and are pre-positioned.
United Nations Television will cover the proceedings live and provide pool coverage. Only still photographers will be allowed inside the Council Chamber. Live television feeds will be available.
