NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF ROMANIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Sorin Dumitru Ducaru, the new Permanent Representative of Romania to the United Nations, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Ducaru had served since 1998 as Minister Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Romania in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Ducaru's diplomatic career with his country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs began in 1993 in the Policy Planning Division on Euro- Atlantic Integration Issues. From 1994 to 1996 he held the posts of Counsellor to the Minister, Director of the Minister's office and Spokesman. From 1996 to 1997, Mr. Ducaru served as Head of the Division for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the Western European Union (WEU) and Strategic Issues.

Prior to his diplomatic service, from 1988 to 1990, Mr. Ducaru worked as an engineer at the Brasov Telecommunications Company. From 1990 to 1991 he was a researcher for the Institute for Automation in Bucharest. Since 1993, Mr. Ducaru has lectured in European Studies at the Romanian National School for Political Studies and Public Administration.

In 1988, Mr. Ducaru received a Masters Degree in Applied Electronics from the Polytechnic Institute in Bucharest. In 1992, he completed postgraduate studies at the Romanian National School of Political Science and Public Administration, Department of International Relations. In 1993, Mr. Ducaru received a Masters Degree in International Relations from the Amsterdam School of International Relations at the University of Amsterdam.

Born on 22 June 1964, Mr. Ducaru is single.
