NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF JORDAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

The new Permanent Representative of Jordan to the United Nations, H.R.H. Prince Zeid Ráad Al Zeid Hussein, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan today. Until his current appointment, Prince Zeid has served as Jordans Deputy Permanent Representative since 1996.
Consonant with his keen interest in the civilian safety hazards posed by landmines, Prince Zeid most recently represented Jordan as deputy delegation Head and Vice-President of the 1999 Maputo Conference, the first State Parties conference on anti-personnel landmines. He also represented his country at the 1997 Treaty-Signing Conference in Ottawa, banning anti-personnel landmines.
At the United Nations, Prince Zeid has been chairing the Non-Aligned Movement working group on peacekeeping. In 1998, he attended the Rome Conference for the establishment of an International Criminal Court, and has since chaired an informal working group - part of the Courts Preparatory Committee -- on elements for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Prince Zeid holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Johns Hopkins University in the United States and a Ph.D. in history from Christs College, Cambridge University, United Kingdom. He served five years in the Jordanian military and, from 1994 to 1996 served as political affairs officer in the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Prince Zeid is married to Princess Sarah Zeid.
