UNITED NATIONS KEY TO EXPANDING IMPACT OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ON DEVELOPMENT, SECRETARY-GENERAL TELLS ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL
20000731CORRECTION
The statement of the representative of Syria, which appears on pages 9 and 10 of Press Release ECOSOC/5929 of 28 July, should read, as follows:
AHMAD AL-HARIRI (Syria) made reference to a number of reports, in particular, that of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, which contained objectionable paragraphs. For example, paragraph 30 in the Human Rights report referred to good governance. However, governance meant improving a situation in the light of experience. One countrys experience did not necessarily apply to another. No clear universal definition of good governance existed. Similarly, polygamy was mentioned as an assault on womans dignity. However, it was a nations prerogative to decide for itself about polygamy. Similarly, spousal responsibilities differed according to a countrys tradition. The term should not refer to all people the same way.
