UNITED NATIONS STAFF COUNCIL APPLAUDS RESCUE OF PEACEKEEPERS

20000721

The United Nations Staff Council congratulates the Secretary-General, the Security Council, and the Indian, Nigerian and Ghanaian contingents on the rescue of the 233 United Nations peacekeepers in Sierra Leone on 15 July. The rescue operation, carried out with logistical assistance for British forces stationed in Sierra Leone, freed troops of the United Natons Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) trapped for over two months by Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels, and ensured the security of United Nations personnel carrying out a difficult and dangerous mission on behalf of the world community. The Staff Council extends its condolences to the family of Sergeant Krishnan Kumar of India, who lost his life during the operation for the safety of his fellow peacekeepers.
